A dumbfounding case of a fake lawyer has emerged from Kerala.

A woman named Sessy Xavier managed to practice as an advocate in Alappuzha(Aleppey) in Kerala for over two years, even without qualifying the LL.B degree and enrolling with the State Bar Council.

Without raising anyone's suspicion, she joined the office of an established lawyer as a junior advocate. She had earlier done internship with that advocate for few months presenting herself as a final year law student. Claiming to have enrolled with the Bar Council, she applied for membership at the Aleppey Bar Association in March 2019, which was given.

During her period of practice, she appeared before the court in several matters. As per certain reports, she even got appointed as Advocate Commissioner in few cases. Not just that- she also contested the Bar Association election this year and got elected as the Librarian.

While so, the Bar Association received an anonymous letter on July 15 alleging that Sessy Xavier had no LL.B degree and enrollment certificate. On enquiring with the Kerala Bar Council, the authorities of the Bar Association were surprised and shocked to note that the enrollment number given by Sessy Xavier belonged to another advocate, who was practicing at Thiruvananthapuram.

Realizing the deception, the Association took swift action terminating her membership. The attention of the District Judge was also invited to the issue. Sessy Xavier did not respond to the notice issued by the Association.

In a complaint filed before the local police, the Association also said that Xavier stole certain books and documents belonging to it misusing her position as Librarian. She has been absconding ever since.

Meanwhile dramatic developments took place in the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court yesterday, when she made an attempt to surrender. As per reports, she chose to appear before court thinking that bail will be available. However, on realizing that the police has included non-bailable offences in the FIR, she fled from the court premises. The police has not been able to trace her yet.
