The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi government to ensure drinking water is available in all government schools and any infrastructure upkeep is taken care of at the earliest.
A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the government to "provide drinking water in the Government schools as well as wherever there is a need of upliftment of infrastructural facility, the same shall also be evaluated by the concerned respondent and remedial steps to this effect shall be carried out at the earliest".
The bench said so while disposing of a PIL moved by Dr. Shashi Bhushan Sonbhadra through advocate Shashank Deosudhi which rued how some government schools were found lacking in basic amenities like drinking water, laboratories, computers, sports facilities and the schools which had these facilities did not have trained faculty.
The PIL had also sought directions to the government to fill existing vacancies of teachers in a time-bound manner.
On this, the court took note of the counter affidavit filed by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board which said that the appointment process of 9232 vacancies for the posts of teachers is underway.
The bench also noted that the issue of filling up of vacancies of teachers is the subject matter of another petition pending before a single judge who has issued directions for further vacancies of 15000 teachers.
