Delhi University To Charge ₹750 For Issuance Of Digital Degrees, Delhi HC To Examine The Legality [Read Order]

The Single Bench of Justice Prathiba M Singh was further informed by the Dean of Examinations that such a fee will not be charged for paper based degrees.

The said information was provided in a bunch of petitions moved by both past and current DU students who have yet not received their degree certificates and are facing problems while applying courses abroad.

While addressing this issue, the court noted that while it will not go into the legality of such free as of now, the question of legality and validity of the same is left open.

Therefore, the Delhi University is allowed to submit an affidavit providing a justification for charging such a fee for issuing of degree certificates.

In its latest affidavit, the University informed the court about the following:

1. Paper degrees of all students, who graduated prior to 2017, have been printed and given to the respective colleges for distribution to the students;
2. That insofar as subsequent years, i.e., 2017 onwards, are concerned, further paper degrees of approximately 10,550 students have been received from the vendor;
3. Data relating to mark sheets of 57,496 students, who passed out in 2017, have been sent to Digilocker, and an endeavour has been made to further transmit the data to Digilocker;
4. Digital degrees for under-graduate/post-graduate students of 2017 have been issued to 5579 students, and this would be followed by the students of the 2018-19 batch

The Petitioners in this case are being represented by Mr Sarthak Maggon.

The court will next take up the matter of December 14.
