The National Human Rights Commission has directed its Director General (Investigation) to depute two fact finding teams, to conduct spot enquiry into the allegations of human rights violation during riots in North Eastern portions of Delhi.
Communal violence broke out in the North-east districts of the national capital on February 24. Allegedly, due to the provocative statements made by certain politicains, a frenzied mob carried out multiple brutal assaults on the unarmed persons who were protesting against the CAA.
While a plea seeking an independent judicial inquiry into the incident is pending before the Delhi High Court, the NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter.
Through a press release issued in that behalf on Saturday, February 29, the Commission clarified that it did not order an inquiry any sooner, keeping in mind the safety interests of its officials.
"In order to ensure the safety of its officers in view of the incidents of cross firing during the violent clashes, the Commission thought it appropriate to send them for enquiry when the situation was little under control. The teams will visit the north east district police control room, affected people and also meet the families of those who lost life in the violence," the press release stated.
Pertinently, the petition seeking judicial inquiry into the incidents has been adjourned till April 13. Accepting the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the situation was not "conducive" for registration of FIR, a bench comprising Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar granted Union of India three weeks time to file counter affidavit in the case.
