The Delhi High Court on Friday lauded the efforts made by the members of the bar for jointly contributing towards payment of college fees of two girls after their father failed to pay them monies.

Many lawyers who were logged-in and were awaiting their turns, had spoken up about offering their contributions for the education expenses of the two girls.

Taking note of the fact that the mother and her two daughters were overwhelmed by the generous outpouring of financial assistance and emotional support by the lawyers, Justice Najmi Waziri said:

"The Court records its appreciation that the members of the Bar have responded so robustly to ameliorate the financial difficulties of the two young students and have further assured that the studies shall not be hindered for want of finances."

"Gestures, such as these, continue to reassure society about the nobleness of the legal profession and that the generosity of human goodness is only waiting to be tapped."

One of the girls, who was a third year law student, had to pay a due of are Rs.75,000 on or before 10th January 2022. On the other hand, the second girl pursuing B- 2 Level Certificate German Language Course (External) had to pay Rs.12,400 towards tuition fee.

The father was engaged in photocopying and book-binding business at a shop at the Tees Hazari Courts. It was his case that he did not have the wherewithal to meet the expenses.

On the other hand, the mother contended that the father had the means and that his previous conduct was ample proof that he would rather have his daughters drop out from college than extend them any financial support.

"Surely, such an unfortunate eventuality should not come to pass," the Court said.

The following lawyers contributed towards the sum:

- Mr. Ashutosh Lohia

- Mr. Rohan Dewan

- Mr. Abhik Kumar

- Mr. Kunal Sabharwal

- Mr. Prateek Som

- Mr. Kumar Prashant

- Mr. Sanjay Katyal

- Mr. Nikita Mishra

- Ms. Honey Khanna

- Mr. Sanjay K. Jain

"Looking into the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case, it would be expected of the said College to extend the date for payment of fees by a few days, to facilitate the bank transfer of monies, so that the law student does not lose out on her academic year," the Court said.

"At this stage, Mr. Mohit Mathur, Senior Advocate and President, Delhi High Court Bar Association has been requested to look into the matter. He assures the court that it shall be looked into."

The Court added that the monies shall be treated as 'Bangia Children's Education Fund' and shall be expended only towards the education related expenses of the petitioner's two daughters, so that they can complete their current academic courses.

The matter will now be heard on February 1.
