Delhi High Court has issued notice in a PIL seeking writ of mandamus to be issued to the Delhi Government to provide e-coupons for ration to the economically underprivileged families living in the northeast districts of Delhi.
The Single Bench of Justice Navin Chawla has issued notice to the Delhi Government and has asked it to file a status report within one week.
The Petitioner has argued that the lockdown imposed by the government has triggered a civilisational and humanitarian crisis with no immediate end in sight, and where lakhs of people are in destitution and now on the verge of starvation.
Filed by the Legal Aid Society of Campus Law Center, Delhi University, the petition states that despite the registration on the government portal, the destitute families have been languishing in the waiting list for several weeks now.
It is further stated therein that despite making multiple representations before the concerned authorities regarding the same, no response has been received.
'present petition concerns the poorest of the poor section of the society and the neediest among the needy with no food and basic care and protection which is the need of the hour in the current extraordinary pandemic of the Covid-19 pandemic which this country and the entire world is currently facing/suffering', the petition submits.
The Petitioner has further argued that the state has the constitutional duty to provide adequate facilities and opportunities by distributing its wealth and resources for settlement of life.
It is also alleged that both the Delhi Government and the Centre has failed in ensuring/ complying with their duty of providing all people of the basic requirements like food especially in a pandemic which has effected the poor in every which
way.
The court will next take to this matter on June 17.
The Petitioner in this case was represented by Mr Tushar Sannu and Ms Ankita Bhadouriya
