In a writ petition moved by the Residents Welfare Association, the Delhi High Court has directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to depute CRPF or Delhi Police personnel to man the barricades/pickets installed outside Nizamuddin West colony.

The Single Bench of Justice C Hari Shankar has further directed that the same should be done, in accordance with the lockdown guidelines issued by the Centre and the State Government, to keep the pickets/barricades manned, and to ensure that the colony does not become a thoroughfare for traffic.

The order has come in a petition seeking installation of gates and continued existence of barricades outside Gates B1 and G8 of the Nizamuddin West society.

Appearing for the Petitioner, Senior Advocate Kirti Uppal submitted that though there are barricades/pickets at the entrance and exit to the colony, they are not being manned, and as a result, the colony has become a thoroughfare.

This, Mr Uppal submits, creates a serious health hazard, especially in the present situation, in which the city is ravaged by the COVID-2019 pandemic.

Mr Uppal further informed the court that CRPF personnel , who were earlier manning the barricades, were removed, owing to some of the CRPF personnel having tested positive for COVID-2019.

In light of these submissions, the court has also issued notices to the Central Government, SDMC, and SHO of the concerned police station.
