A judge of the Madras High Court, Justice SM Subramaniam has decided to contribute his one month's salary of Rs. 2.25 lakh, for the welfare of unorganized labour force who have lost their earnings due to industrial standstill in the face of COVID-19 pandemic, the Hindu reported.

A cheque for the same will be handed over to the State Chief Secretary today, i.e. March 21.

Recently, a division bench of the Madras High Court had also raised concern over the state of poor and shelter-less, who as per the bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and R. Hemalatha will be the worst hit class of persons, in these days of medical "crisis".

In a direction made on Friday, the bench thus asked the State authorities to provide food and shelter to such people, during the nationwide Janta curfew to be carried out from 7 am to 9 pm on March 22, Sunday.

The court also ordered that if necessary, the Government should utilize the Community Halls, Marriage Halls and Schools for this purpose.
