The Principal Sessions Court, Chennai on Thursday remanded former Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader RBVS Manian to 14-day judicial custody in a case for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Dr. BR Ambedkar.

Manian was arrested by Chennai City Police on Thursday morning from his residence in T-Nagar after a video went viral where the former leader was seen making alleged derogatory remarks against Dr. Ambdekar and Thiruvalluvar.  Manian had also allegedly belittled people belonging to the Scheduled Caste Community.

The police had thus registered a case against Manian under the Provisions of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the IPC for disturbing public tranquillity and creating enmity between two groups.

After arrest, Manian was produced before the District Sessions Judge S Alli where he said that his statements were misunderstood and requested the court to consider his health and age.

The court then remanded him to Judicial custody. When a request was made to allow Manian to be treated at a private hospital, the court remarked that the request will be considered.
