The Centre has notified the elevation of Justice Mohammad Rafiq, Judge of the Rajasthan High Court as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. His appointment will take effect from the day he assumes office.

The Collegium had earlier recommended former Chief Justice of the Madras HC, Justice VK Tahilramani to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya HC, who resigned in September to show her protest against the proposal. Subsequently, the recommendation to elevate Justice Rafiq was made vide Resolution dated October 17.

The position has been vacant since the transfer of Justice AK Mittal, former Chief Justice of the Meghalaya HC, as the CJ of Madhya Pradesh High Court, notified by the Centre on October 30.

Justice Rafiq was elevated as a judge in May, 2006 and is presently the second-senior most judge at the Rajasthan High Court. Formerly, he practiced at the Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court and specialized in Writs for Constitutional and Service matters. He also held prestigious positions of Assistant Government Advocate, Deputy Government Advocate, Junior Standing Counsel for Official Liquidator, Company Court, Additional Standing Counsel for Central Government and Panel advocate for Finance, Cooperative, Animal Husbandry, Forest, Irrigation and Local Self Departments of the State Government of Rajasthan. He also served as an Additional Advocate General for the Rajasthan Government and Panel Advocate for Indian Railways (Western Railways).
