The Central government has deferred the due date for renewal of motor vehicle third party insurance and for health insurance, for those persons whose policies are due to expire during the lockdown period.

Through a notification issued in this behalf on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance has extended the due date for policies expiring between March 25 and April 14, till April 21 for those policy holders who are "unable" to make payments during the lockdown.

Two notifications issued in this behalf read,

"The policy holders whose motor vehicle third party insurance policies fall due for renewal during the period on and from the 25th March, 2020 up to the 14th April, 2020 and who are unable to make payment of their renewal premium on time in view of the prevailing situation in the country as a result of Corona Virus disease (COVID-19), are allowed to make such payment for renewal of policies to their insurers on or before the 21st April, 2020 to ensure continuity of the statutory motor vehicle third party insurance cover from the date on which the policy falls due for renewal."

"The policy holders whose health insurance policies fall due for renewal during the period on and from the 25th March, 2020 to the 14th April, 2020 and who are unable to make payment of their renewal premium on time in view of the prevailing situation in the country as a result of Corona Virus disease (COVID-19), are allowed to make such payment for renewal of policies to their insurers on or before the 21st April, 2020 to ensure continuity of the health insurance cover from the date on which the policy falls due for renewal."

Earlier, the government had extended the validity of all documents under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, including Fitness certificates, Permit (all types), Driving License, etc., that were subsisting on February 1, till June 30
