The Central Government has notified the appointment of Advocate Savanur Vishwajith Shetty, to be an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court, for a period of two years.
The Supreme Court Collegium had first recommended to elevate him vide a resolution dated March 25, 2019. However, the Government referred his name back for reconsideration with the following observation:
"There is a complaint against Shri Savanur Vishwajith Shetty that he is having nexus with underworld and land mafia which indulged in extortion."
Subsequently in October last year, the Collegium overruled these objections while reiterating the proposal to elevate him.
The Collegium noted that the Intelligence Bureau in its report had, inter alia, recorded that Advocate Shetty enjoys good personal and professional image and nothing adverse came to notice against his integrity. Besides, all the consultee-Judges found him suitable for elevation. The complaint against him was found to be unverified at all levels. Therefore, the Collegium resolved to reiterate his name.
