The Calcutta High Court on Monday published an 'Action Plan' for judicial officers in order to reduce the pendency of cases in subordinate judiciary. The Action Plan envisages targets for disposal of different categories of cases pending for 7 years and more and also allots time frames for such speedy disposal.

The Districts of West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been categorised into three different clusters in order to make the Action Plan more effective. On the basis of number of cases pending in district courts, the cases have been into three groups or clusters: i.e. A, B and C.

Pendency in Cluster A amounts to 85,000 cases and more, Cluster B includes pending cases between 40,000-85,000 whereas Cluster C has less than 40,000 cases. Furthermore, the targets for disposal of pending cases have also been categorised on the basis of different Courts such as the CBI Courts and the special Courts dealing with cases under the POCSO Act, NDPS Act, SC ST Act and the Electricity Act among others.

The notification released by the High Court administration states that the action plan has been conceptualized under the guidance of the Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Rajesh Bindal.

It is expected that by adopting such a plan, considerable number of pending cases can be reduced expeditiously and a remarkable difference in the backlog of cases in subordinate judiciary will be noticed, the notification reads.
