The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal State government to submit a comprehensive report on the State government's withdrawal of security of BJP MLA and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Justice Shivkant Prasad directed the State to submit the aforementioned report before the next date of hearing i.e. on July 1.

Suvendu Adhikari had filed a plea before the Calcutta High Court enquiring as to why the State government had withdrawn the security provided to him on May 18, 2021. He had submitted before the Court that even though he enjoys Z-Category security from the Central Government, he would require the assistance of the State government's security arrangements in respect to three areas; namely pilot car, route lining and monitoring the places where public meetings may be held.

During an earlier hearing before Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya the State government had denied withdrawing any such security cover of the petitioner on May 18, 2021. The Advocate General appearing for the State had also informed the Court that the petitioner had been given adequate security arrangements that commensurate his status as the Leader of the Opposition such as security personnels both of proximate and peripheral nature, who are presently in charge of the petitioner's security.

The report that is to be filed by the State government would also include an assessment of any threat currently posed to the petitioner.
