The Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday appointed senior advocate Gopal Mukherjee as the Advocate General of West Bengal pursuant to the powers conferred under Article 165(1) of the Constitution of India. The development comes hours after senior advocate Kishore Datta tendered his resignation as the Advocate General citing 'personal reasons' marking an end to his nearly 4 years long tenure.

Kishore Datta is the fourth Advocate General of West Bengal in a row to have resigned from the post during the regime of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His predecessor barrister Jayanta Mitra had stepped down before completion of his tenure due to 'differences with the government'.

In a letter addressed to the Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankar, senior advocate Kishore Datta had submitted,

"I do hereby tender resignation as the Advocate General for the State of West Bengal with immediate effect, owing to personal reasons. Please accept the same. It was a wonderful experience working for the State of West Bengal".

The Governor of West Bengal affirmed the appointment of senior advocate Gopal Mukerjee as the new Advocate General vide his official Twitter handle.
