The Bar Council of India has unanimously approved the proposal of BCI member Ved Prakash Sharma to put moratorium for three years with effect from academic year 2020-21 on approval of affiliation of new law colleges in the country except State run National Law Universities.
In a press release, the BCI said "The Council has observed that at present there are enough institutions in all parts of the country to feed law courts and to serve people. There is no dearth of advocates and the existing institutions are sufficient to produce number of law graduates annually."
Responding to the development, Bar Council of Delhi Chairman Advocate K N Mittal said that it was a "bold step to ensure quality legal education and control unchecked growth of law colleges."
As per the provisions of the Advocates Act, the sanction of BCI is necessary for starting a law college.
