The Bar Council of West Bengal has decided to provide financial assistance to needy lawyers who have been adversely affected due to suspension of court work amid the lockdown.

Information regarding the same was submitted before the Calcutta High Court on Thursday during the hearing of a letter petition filed by Advocate Ashoke Kr. Dhandhania.

During the hearing, a division bench of Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice Arjit Banerjee perused the affidavit-in-opposition filed by the Bar Council and observed that it had resolved to assist financially unstable lawyers.

"It appears from the Bar Council's affidavit-in-opposition that the Council has taken a resolution to make available financial assistance to those learned lawyers who are in extreme need thereof," the court said.

In view thereof, the bench directed the Council to give effect to the said resolution, "without prejudice to the rights and contentions of the parties in the writ petition and subject to further orders that may be passed…"

The matter will now be taken up on April 30.

The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has also resolved to extend financial assistance to all those needy advocates, who are unable to meet their day to day expenses due to the lockdown and consequent suspension of court work.

Similarly, Bar Council of Delhi had also announced that it will disburse Rs. 5,000 each to lawyers in need.
