The Bar Council of Delhi has constituted a special committee to draft the Advocates Protection Act for the safety of lawyers practicing in the national capital who are registered with the lawyers’ body.

In view of the recent attacks on lawyers inside and outside courts, the Bar Council of Delhi in its meeting held today unanimously decided to constitute the committee to draft the comprehensive Advocates Protection Act to ensure that the legislation is enacted by the Delhi Government.

The Special Committee constituted will be headed by K.C. Mittal, former Chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi.

Other members of the committee are as follows:

- Mr. D.K. Sharma, Chairman of Executive Committee of BCD

- Mr. Sanjay Rathi, Hony. Secretary of BCD

- Mr. Ajayinder Sangwan, Co-Chairman of BCD

- Mr. Ajay Sondhi, Co-Chairman of BCD

The press release issued by the lawyers’ body states that the BCD in the meeting also considered that the Government of Rajasthan has already enacted a similar legislation and a proposal is also sent by the Bar Council of India to the Government of India for enacting the Advocates Protection Act.

“All the members on realising the ground realities and the situation, were in favour of bringing Advocates Protection Act for advocates practicing in Delhi and NCR, enrolled with Bar Council of Delhi, on urgent basis,” the press release adds.

The BCD has also requested all its members as well as office bearers of the coordination Committee of the district bar associations to give their inputs.
