Assam Human Rights Commission Seeks Status Of Probe Into 3 Bangladesh Nationals' Lynching Case

The Assam Human Rights Commission has issued a fresh notice to the Superintendent of Police of the Karimganj district seeking the status of the probe into the midnight lynching of 3 Bangladeshi nationals (alleged cattle smugglers) in July last year.

The commission was acting on a complaint made by Advocate Baglekar Akash Kumar two days after the incident.

Earlier, noting that the probe into this case was yet to be completed by the Karimganj District police, the Commission had, by its order dated September 22, 2021 asked the Superintendent of Police, Karimganj to submit a status report of the ongoing investigation.

Stressing that any form of lynching can't be permitted in our society, the Commission headed by Justice T. Vaiphei, in its order observed that such a matter should not go unpunished as otherwise, it would send a wrong signal to others.

Against this backdrop, the Court once again directed the Superintendent of Police, Karimganj to submit the present status of the investigation of the case to the Commission on or before November 29, 2021.

"We appreciate the difficulties faced by the police in identifying or arresting the culprits involved in such lynching case. But then, the difficulties in investigation cannot be a ground for abandoning the investigation or half-heartedly investigating the case inasmuch as such attitude, if adopted by the police, will never instill fear in the minds of the public", the Commission stressed.
