Applications Invited For Shamnad Basheer IP/Trade Fellowship With Texas A&M University School Of Law: Apply By September 15
The Association for Accessible Medicines has, in collaboration with the Texas A&M University School of Law, initiated the "Shamnad Basheer IP/Trade Fellowship with Texas A&M University School of Law".
About
This is the 1st edition of this Fellowship program that has been initiated in the loving memory of IP luminary, late Prof. Shamnad Basheer. Prof. Basher was a distinct legal scholar, who founded the IP blog SpicyIP and worked to make legal education accessible for underprivileged students through his trust, Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA).
Roles & Responsibilities
The Fellow shall be responsible to produce a white paper that examines the Special 301 submissions of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). On this aspect, the fellow shall work closely with Prof. Srividhya Ragavan of Texas A&M University School of Law and Jonathan Kimball, the Vice President of Trade and International Affairs at the Association for Accessible Medicines. However, the Fellow shall alone be responsible for the opinions and conclusions contained in the white paper. It shall not reflect the views of Texas A&M University School of Law.
The Fellow will also evaluate the submissions' role and impact on USTR policy making and their consistency with the approach to intellectual property protection and enforcement outlined in the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 (Trade Promotion Authority) and the May 10 Agreement concerning international trade negotiations and access to healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation.
Eligibility
Researchers of all ranks are eligible to apply for the Fellowship.
Tenure
The Fellowship is programmed for duration of three months, extendable to up to five months.
Applications
All applicants shall submit their resume along with a description of their interest in the fellowship, highlighting any relevant past work in 300 words.
All applicants are required to make disclosures pertaining to any actual or potential conflict of interest in relation to any past employment, consultation or ownership of any substantial financial interest in any company or organization that would benefit from their white paper.
All submissions shall be made to Ms. Lori Bacon via email at lbacon@law.tamu.edu, under the subject line "Shamnad Basheer Fellowship". The last date for application is September 15, 2019.
Stipend
A fixed stipend of $10,000 shall be awarded to the Fellow, subject to the following requirements:
a) Preparation and submission of a white paper addressing the foregoing questions, to Texas A&M University School of Law;
b) Spending up to five days in residence at Texas A&M University School of Law, presenting the white paper to faculty and students; and
c) Presenting the paper at a policy forum in Washington, D.C.
Reimbursement
The Fellow shall be provided reasonable travel and lodging expenses for the law school residency, up to $2,000. The Law School will further provide travel, lodging, and food expenses for the visiting Fellow's travel to Washington, D.C.
