The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday directed the state government to ensure strict compliance of the Supreme Court orders in the matter of providing treatment to COVID positive patients and also providing necessary facilities to the Doctors and the Staff working at the frontline.

While hearing a writ petition titled Alakh Alok Srivastava v. Union of India on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had directed all the state governments to ensure availability of requisite faculties for both COVID-19 patients as well as the health workers treating them.

Keeping this in view, the High Court bench comprising of Chief Justice Sri Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari and Justice M. Satyanarayana Murthy on Thursday sought a report from the state government with respect to the faculties available at the government hospital in Eluru District, where 6 COVID positive patients are being treated.

The High Court has also asked the state government to ensure availability of WHO-approved Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for Doctors, Para-medical staff in the hospital.

The order has been made in a suo moto case registered to address the challenges in the state with respect to restricting the pandemic.

Being mindful of various media reports regarding non-cooperation of hospital staff in a private hospital in Eluru due to acute shortage of PPE, the High Court had on Wednesday, April 1, asked the state to make requisite arrangements for the same.

Further, with regards the COVID positive patients, the court had asked the Additional District and Sessions Judge to visit the concerned hospital and supply information with respect to the number of patients, availability of medical staff and medical equipments, adherence to the WHO guidelines on social distancing, etc.

During the course of hearing on Thursday, April 2, the High Court was informed that the COVID positive patients had been moved to the government facility and accordingly, PPE kits had been supplied.

In view thereof, the High Court has asked the government to ensure that this government facility is well equipped to fight the infection and to file a report forthwith.

"Patients, who were found COVID-19 positive in ASRAM Hospital, Eluru have been shifted to Government General Hospital, Eluru and their treatment is going on, but whether those patients have been duly treated providing all facilities or not is not available on record. However, it shall be made available for perusal on the next date," the court said.

The matter will now be taken up next week.
