The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday directed the UP Government to file a statement indicating the time period that it requires to fill up the existing vacancies in the Revenue Courts in the state.
A Division Bench comprising of Justices Ritu Raj Awasthi and Saroj Yadav asked the Standing Counsel to appear before the Court on February 24, with complete instructions as to within what period the existing vacancies in the Revenue Courts would be filled up.
Background
The direction was made while hearing a suo moto case registered by the Court to address the issue of long-pending vacancies.
In November last year, the High Court had asked the State Chief Secretary to file an affidavit indicating the steps taken by the UP Government to provide necessary infrastructure to Revenue Courts in the state.
In January 2021, the Court registered a suo moto case titled "Suo Moto With Regard To Filling Up All Vacancies In Revenue" to check the lack of Judicial Officers in these Courts.
It had expressed disappointment at the State's failure to file an affidavit with regard to the efforts made in fulfilling the existing vacancies.
On Wednesday, the Standing Counsel informed the Bench that an affidavit has been prepared and will be file in the Registry during the course of the day.
However, when the Court inquired as to the timeline within which the vacancies will be filled, the counsel was not in a position to give any answer.
The matter will now be taken into consideration of February 24, 2021.
