The Central Board of Secondary Examination on Friday informed the Supreme Court that instead of conducting final examination for students of Class X and XII, it will evaluate the students on the basis of an Assessment Scheme.

The draft notification for this Scheme was accepted by the Supreme Court today, while disposing of a batch of petitions filed by a group of parents who challenged the CBSE move to conduct the remaining board exams in July.

SC Accepts CBSE Notification Cancelling Examinations

As per the draft notification, performance of students will be assessed on the basis of the Assessment Scheme, and Results based on the same will be declared by July 15, 2020.

No Examination for Class X

The Board has informed that there will be no further exams for students of Class X.

"For candidates in class X, no further examinations will be conducted and the result declared by CBSE on the basis of assessment scheme will be treated as final," the notification states.

Optional Examination for Class XII

So far as students of Class XII are concerned, the Board has decided that students who have completed all their examinations, their results will be declared based on their performance in the examinations.

However, for the subjects whose examinations were scheduled to be conducted from 1 July to 15 July, 2020, CBSE will conduct an "optional examination" as soon as conditions are conducive.

It is clarified that Candidates whose results will be declared based on the assessment scheme will be allowed to appear in these optional examinations to improve their performance, if they wish so. However, the marks obtained by a candidate in these optional examinations will be treated as final for those who have opted to take these examinations.

Assessment Scheme

The Scheme, as suggested by the "Competent Committee" of CBSE stipulates:

  • For students who have completed all their examinations, their results will be declared based on their performance in the examinations. (Applicable to students of both classes-X and XII)
  • For students who have appeared in the examinations in "more than 3 subjects", the average of the marks obtained in best three performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted.
  • For students who have appeared in the examinations in "only 3 subjects", the average of the marks obtained in the best two performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted.
  • For students who have appeared in the examinations in only 1 or 2 subjects (mainly from Delhi), their results will be declared based on performance in the appeared subjects and performance in internal/ practical/ project assessment. These students will also be allowed to appear in the Optional examinations conducted by CBSE to improve their performance, if they desire to do so. Result of these students will also be declared along with other students.
