The Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued a notice exempting all the advocates appearing before the principal bench at Bombay and other benches of the High Court including the High Court of Bombay at Goa from wearing black coats and advocates' gowns.

Instead the Chief Justice has allowed them to wear a tie or a white band to ensure 'proper decorum' before virtual courts. Similarly, as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of Covid-19, in a circular dated May 13, the Supreme Court had relaxed the dress code of lawyers appearing before it through video conferencing. Lawyers were allowed to wear "plain white-shirt/white-salwar-kameez/white saree, with a plainwhite neck band".

Following the Supreme Court's lead, the Bar Council of India had also issued a circular the next day reiterating the exemption from wearing black coat and gown as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Previously, the High Court had allowed all the judges of subordinate courts in Maharashtra, Goa, UTs of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu from wearing both the black coat and gown, whereas lawyers appearing before them have been exempt from wearing black coats.
