The Delhi High Court for the first time has decided to permit the use of A4 size paper with printing on both sides, for the filings. The recommendation made by the Rules Committee in this regard has been approved by the full court.

Since April 01 last year, the High Court has allowed the use of A4 size paper in all jurisdictions for all kind of pleadings contained in petitions, affidavits, applications or other documents etc, and all memorandum of appeals, orders and judgments in the High Court as well as in all District Courts of Delhi.

However, the decision regarding the use of A4 size paper on both sides was pending.

As per latest practice directions issued through Registrar General of the Delhi High Court on October 10, the printing/typing shall now be permitted on both sides of the paper.

The latest notification is as under:

"A4 size paper be used uniformly in all jurisdictions for all kinds of pleadings contained in petitions, affidavits, applications or other documents etc, and all memorandum of appeals, orders and judgments in the High Court as well as in all District Courts of Delhi. The A4 size paper to be used as above shall confirm to the following specification of paper and formatting style :-

The printing/typing shall be on both sides of the paper."

These Practice Directions shall come into force w.e.f. 01.11.2022.

Recently, a division bench of the High Court during a hearing was informed by its administrative side that while the Rules Committee has already resolved to use A4 size paper and printing on both sides for the purpose of judicial work, the matter was pending to be finally approved by the Full Court.

The submission was made in a public interest litigation filed by Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change.
