In a time where writing skills among members of the current generation is fast waning, the All India Law Students Association (AILSA) has announced the National Legal Essay Competition 2014 (NLEC’14), today.
AILSA, is a not-for-profit student run organisation under the leadership of Mr. Manas Dowlani as its President, and haspatronage extended by Senior Advocate Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala. AILSA has been conducting various seminars, study trips and interactive sessions for a while, and has recently forayed into the world of legal writing.
In our conversation with Manas on the advent of National Legal Essay Competition, he quoted,
“NLEC’14 promises to be a highly popular competition among law students; the choice of topics and the prizes up for grabs are definitely going to grip the attention of students and legal professionals alike. The competition has a pool of five topics from which a participant can choose to write.”
The topics for the competition are mentioned as below:- NOTA: Progress or Regress of democracy?
- Are One Person Companies (OPCs) glorified sole proprietorship?
- Can rights be limited under the garb of religion? Analyse with reference to the Shabnam Hashmi case and Article 44 of the Constitution of India.
- Patent Thickets: A prickly bush to pass through?
- Comment on the powers of RBI under section 9 of the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2012.
If one thought that the topics are intriguing enough for them to show a continuing interest in NLEC’14, we present to you a glimpse at the prizes being handed out:
500 Participatory prizes worth Rs. 5,000 on first-come-first serve basis; making it worth a whooping Rs. 25,00,000. An unprecedented value to awards worth Rs. 1,70,000 ; listed as below:
- 1st Prize : Rs. 50,000
- 2nd Prize : Rs. 40,000
- 3rd Prize : Rs. 30,000
- 5 consolation prizes : Rs. 10,000 (x5)
Eligibility Criteria: The competition is open for all students pursuing the 3-year or 5-year Law Course from any institution recognized by the Bar Council of India, in India.
Submission Guidelines
i. The word limit for the essay is 3000 - 6000 words (excluding footnotes).
ii. The cover page of the submission should contain the following details only:
- Unique Submission Number
- Title of the Essay
- Abstract of the Essay (250 words)
iii. The cover page and/or main body of the essay should not carry any mention of the name, contact details, or the name of the institution. In any other case, it shall lead to immediate disqualification.
iv. Co-authorship to a maximum of 2 individual authors is permitted.
v. Rules of formatting: The essay must be submitted in the following format:
- Page Margins : 1 inch on all sides
- Body of Essay
- Font Type : Times New Roman
- Font Size: 12 pts.
- Line spacing: Double spacing with ‘0 pts.’ before and after.
- Alignment : Justified
- Footnotes
- Font Type : Times New Roman
- Font Size: 10 pts.
- Line spacing: Single spacing with ‘0 pts.’ before and after.
- Alignment : Justified
- Style : ILI Delhi Rules of Footnoting
vi) The soft copy of the essay should be submitted in MS Word file (.doc/.docx).
Last Date for Submission: April 15, 2014
Declaration of Result: May 31, 2014
