Dinabandhu Sahu was first and foremost a patriot, whose actions in public sphere, in and outside Government, were directed towards social, educational and economic advancement of people at large and development of the nation. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi which was reflected in his humane dealing with all persons irrespective of their position or station in life. Everyone who interacted with him felt close to him. As a person, he was upright and fearless. He was a brilliant lawyer and his cross-examination skills were legendary. Dinabandhu Sahu had defended pro-bono several leaders of Prajamandala Movement and was later elected to the Orissa Legislative Assembly from Kendrapara Constituency in 1946, 1952 and 1957. He was also in the Council of Ministers of Orissa Government constituted in 1946, 1952 and 1957. As a Minister, Dinabandhu Sahu introduced a number of path breaking legislation and initiated many innovative schemes for industrialization and development of Orissa. Founder and President of Kendrapara College and Engineering School at Kendrapara President of Akhila Bharatiya Tailika Vaishya Mahasabha for many years District Governor of Rotary Club. Member, Orissa Study Group, National Police Commission Member of Mandal Commission. This memorial lecture on Sri Dinbandhu Sahu Memorial was instituted by his daughter Prof. Sarmistha Sahu.

About The Speaker

Amod K Kanth is the founder and mentor of Prayas JAC (Juvenile Aid Centre) Society (Foremost practise & research centre on everything Juvenile Justice), juvenile justice champion. He is also an eminent author and social development expert. His public service has spanned over four decades. The key positions he has held range from First Chairman of Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), Director General Police for Goa and DGP Police for Arunachal Pradesh and Former-Coordinator of NITI Ayog-CSOs Standing Committee. He has also led some of the most sensational investigations for cases including the Rajiv Gandhi assassination and the Jessica Lal murder case. He has authored the "Police Diaries" series on major criminal cases. The US State Department has recognized his endeavors in combating human trafficking by naming him a 'Global Hero'. He has contributed to and shaped the juvenile justice landscape, public policy sector and Civil Society Sector with his commitment, leadership, vision and passion.

About The Topic

The topic for the lecture is “Framing Juvenile Justice in Child Rights,” wherein, Kanth will dive deep into how and why juvenile justice is integral to and located in the Child Rights framework, its journey so far, the evolution of the law as it stands today, it's implementation on the ground, and the actual access to justice and challenges that the children face. He will share his insights into the challenges and how to address them to meaningfully achieve child rights and justice for all children.
