The Centre for Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights (CIIPR), Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day by organising IPD Innovatia-the first edition of the Interactive Panel Discussion on April 26, 2023. The theme of the panel discussion was on the ‘Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Law: Legal and Ethical Considerations’. The panelists for the discussion were Prof. (Dr.) Anand Pawar, Vice-Chancellor, RGNUL, Prof. (Dr.) Naresh Kumar Vats, Dean Academics, RGNUL, Mr. Pranit Biswas, Managing Associate of S.S. Rana & Co. and Mr. Ankur Garg, Partner, Laxmikumaran and Sridharan Attorneys.
The panel discussion was initiated by acknowledging the dynamic nature of IPR as a field and the interconnection of artificial intelligence and intellectual property rights. Mr. Pranit Biswas, esteemed panellist, discussed the implications of ChatGPT as an AI speech model and its moral and ethical considerations. Further, the discussion was accelerated by contemplating whether AI can supplement to human work and creativity. The risks pertaining to copyright infringement and issues such as plagiarism, incorrect citations in academic domain were also discussed. Mr. Ankur Garg, esteemed panellist, added to the previous discussion by addressing the issues surrounding protection of AI and its implications. He deliberated upon understanding inventive step in patent applications and its applicability to AI technologies. The questions relating to cryptocurrency, AI intervention and implications of granting intellectual property rights to the AI tools and the works generated by them were asked by the students and detailed discussion was done on these aspects.
