NLU Delhi Hosts The Seventh Edition Of Summer School On Platform Governance [March 20-26]
The Centre for Communication Governance, National Law University Delhi (CCG NLUD) is hosting the seventh edition of the Summer School organised between the Hans-Bredow Institut, University of Hamburg, the Institute for Technology and Society of Rio De Janeiro (ITS Rio), and CCG NLUD.
The goal of the week-long program is to bring together a diverse set of scholars, instructors, and students for an intensive week of lectures, discussions, and interactive classroom activities. While past editions of the Summer School have focussed on Data Governance, Freedom of Expression & Online Intermediaries, Privacy, Harmful Speech, Surveillance, and Data Protection, this year, the focus of the Summer School will be on ‘Platform Governance’.
CCG NLUD is hosting twenty students from Brazil and Germany, who will be joined by eight students from the National Law University Delhi to make up the Summer School cohort of 2023. Also seven instructors from the Hans-Bredow Institut and ITS Rio, alongside researchers from CCG NLUD and select external instructors, will be conducting this year’s lectures.
The lecture schedule includes sessions on Content Moderation, Platform Impact on Elections, The Oversight Board, Platform Transparency, The Content Safety Ecosystem, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and Platforms, Competition & Consumer Protection Issues. The Summer School Program also includes a keynote lecture by Shyam Divan (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India) and a guest lecture by Pamela San Martin, a former Electoral Councillor at the National Electoral institute in Mexico and current member of Meta’s Oversight Board.
Brazil, Germany, and India are countries with large populations, home to vibrant democracies and diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Each country has in the recent past made significant regulatory efforts to regulate online platforms, and the Summer School seeks to harness these diverse learnings and facilitate a cross- country exchange of ideas. The Summer School aims to provide an opportunity for researchers to share their experiences and insights on platform regulation, leading to the development of new ideas and approaches, thus facilitating the creation of new networks amongst both students and researchers, with the aim of undertaking collaborative research and professional development. Ultimately, such a program can contribute significantly to the development of effective and nuanced policies and regulations in each of the three countries represented.
