The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) and the National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi) held a virtual Joint Faculty Workshop on 25th May 2021 to explore research and academic partnerships in the field of technology and law.
The workshop was designed as a platform for a meaningful exchange of ideas between faculty from both institutions. The purpose was also to discuss and work towards specific academic and research projects between IIT Delhi and NLU Delhi. Both institutions are in the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding that will encompass interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and research.
The session began with an introduction to the workshop by Prof. Bolia, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi. Prof. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, and Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao, Vice Chancellor, NLU Delhi then addressed the faculty, highlighting the need for higher education to be more interdisciplinary, inter-professional and international.
Faculty from NLU Delhi began presentations with Prof. Harpreet Kaur and Dr Arul George Scaria who spoke on the idea of a 'Joint Startup Incubation Centre'. Dr. Anup Surendranath and Shreya Rastogi from Project 39A spoke on 'Digital Forensics' in the criminal justice system. Dr. Daniel Mathew from the Centre of Communication Governance spoke on the Interface of Law, Policy and Technology. This was followed by presentations from faculty at IIT Delhi. Prof. Archana Chugh, Kusuma School of Biosciences spoke on assessing the role of intellectual property rights in Science Diplomacy. Prof. Ankush Aggarwal, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences presented on India's official statistics and the underlying legal framework. Prof. Nomesh Bolia, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Coordinator, DAKSH Centre of Excellence for Law & Technology, spoke on case management and data in the judiciary.
Professor Daniel Martin Katz, Chicago Kent School of Law delivered the Keynote Speech on the need for technology to define and solve systemic failures in the legal system.
The session ended with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Scaria, who encouraged further conversations between faculty at IIT Delhi and NLU Delhi, and emphasized the need to enrich this partnership between experts in technology and law.
