Vaikunta Baliga College of law, Udupi is the second oldest law college in the State of Karnataka. Udupi Law College was established in the year 1957 and is named after the Late Sri. B. Vaikunta Baliga, a legal luminary and the then Minister of law, Government of Mysore. The college is one among the 42 reputed educational institutions run by Dr. T.M.A.Pai Foundation, Manipal. It was founded by Late Dr. T.M.A.Pai who is remembered as a pioneer in the field of education, banking and industry. The college is guided by its motto "Sathyameva Jayathe Nanrutham" which means Truth and Righteousness will always triumph. The college imparts legal education with a mission to transform a student into a responsible citizen. The institution has grown in stature to become one of the premier institutions in the state of Karnataka through its various programmes like 5 Year B.A. LL.B, 3 Year LL.B course, P.G. Diploma in Cyber and Information Technology Law and Certificate Course in Law and Medicine. It is permanently affiliated to Karnataka State Law University and is recognized by the Bar Council of India, UGC and Re-accredited with 'B+' Grade by NAAC.

The College every year hosts the Advocate P Shivaji Shetty National Level Moot Court competition which provides a great opportunity for the students to prove their mettle.

Date of Competition: April 12th & 13th, 2025

Language: The language of the competition shall be English

Eligibility

Law Schools/Colleges / Institutes / Universities, recognized by the Bar Council of India are eligible to participate in the National Level Moot Court Competition, 2025. The participants should currently be pursuing their Bachelor's Degree in Law, i.e. Three Year or Five Year Law Courses.

Composition of Teams

Each team shall comprise of two Mooters and a Researcher.

In addition to the main event, the participants shall also participate in the judgment writing Competition.

Registration

The Participating team shall duly fill the Registration Form provided and send it along with the Registration fee of Rs. 5000/- (Rupees Five Thousand only-with Accommodation) or Rs. 3500/- (Rupees Three Thousand Five Hundred only-without Accommodation), which is not refundable. The teams shall submit the registration form along with the Payment Details.

Once the final registration is done the team shall mail a soft copy of the registration form along with the details of the payment to the corresponding Mail Id vbclmootcourt25@gmail.com upon which the team participation and the registration will be confirmed and the team shall be allotted with a "Team Code" and same must be used for the memorials and for all the purposes during the Competitions.

Draw of Lots

Draw of lots will be done soon after inauguration. It will determine the sequence of arguments i.e., Petitioner/Plaintiff or Respondent/Defendant. It shall also decide the team which you will be competing against.

Structure of Rounds

The oral rounds shall comprise of:

A) Preliminary Rounds

There shall be two Preliminary Rounds. Each team will be given the opportunity to argue on both sides (i.e. Petitioner and Respondent) in the Preliminary Rounds which shall be determined by way of drawing of lots. Each team shall get a total of 30 minutes to present their case. This time will include five minutes of rebuttal. The division of time between the speakers is at the discretion of the team members. Subject to a maximum of 20 minutes for any speaker. Before the commencement of arguments, each team shall inform the Court Officer the time allotted for each speaker.

The top eight teams based on cumulative marks secured in two preliminary rounds shall qualify for the Quarter Final Rounds. In case of a tie, memorial score will be considered to break the tie. If the tie is not broken, then the team to advance to the Quarter Final Rounds will be decided by drawing of lots.

B) Quarter Final Round

In the Quarter Final Round, each team shall argue for only one side, which shall be determined by drawing of lots. On the basis of knock-out, 4 (four) teams shall advance to the Semi Final Rounds. The rules governing the Preliminary Rounds regarding time are applicable to Quarter Final Rounds.

C) Semi Final Round

The rules governing the Quarter Final Rounds shall apply to the Semi Final Rounds. On the basis of knock-out, two teams shall advance to the final round.

D) Final Round

In the Final Round also, each team shall argue for only one side which shall be determined by way of drawing of lots. Each team shall get a total of 45 minutes to present the case. This time will include rebuttal. The division of time is at the discretion of the team members, subject to a maximum of 25 minutes for any one speaker (including rebuttal time).
