Centre for Criminal Justice administration and research (CJAR) and the Centre for legislative research and reforms (CLRR) is hosting a Bootcamp on Criminal Law Reform on 23rd and 24th December 2024 at the DNLU campus. This two-day event aims to provide in-depth insights into the major changes brought by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. The bootcamp will cover significant legislative changes, new procedural mechanisms, and the introduction of modern legal concepts in India's criminal law system.
Dharmashastra National Law University's Centre for Criminal Justice Administration and Research (CJAR) is dedicated to continuous study of various aspects of criminal law and its enforcement. The Centre has shifted its focus toward addressing contemporary issues within the criminal justice system. Committed to fostering ongoing learning, the Centre organizes podcasts, webinars, and special lectures to engage with current threats we face.
Similarly, the Centre for Legislative Research and Reforms (CLRR) is an institution established to undertake legislative studies and research aimed at promoting law reforms in India. Its core objective is to serve the public good by drafting laws in plain language and making them accessible and comprehensive to diverse audiences, thereby ensuring better compliance. The Centre focuses on enhancing public awareness about enacted laws and supporting the government in achieving the constitutional goals of social, economic, and political justice.
The event will feature various sessions led by distinguished legal experts and professors, offering participants a unique opportunity to engage with both theoretical and practical aspects of the new laws. Below is an overview of the bootcamp's key sessions:
Day 1: December 23, 2024
- Session 1: Overview of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), including structural changes and the objectives behind the new legislation.
- Session 2: A detailed look at FIRs, arrest procedures, police complaints, and types of trials under BNSS.
- Session 3: Introduction to bail procedures and plea bargaining, with a focus on the evidence framework in trials.
- Session 4: Introduction to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), its impact on criminal justice reforms, and key changes in types of punishment and general exceptions.
Day 2: December 24, 2024
- Session 5: Discussions on key criminal offenses such as abetment, conspiracy, and offenses against women, children, and the state under BNS.
- Session 6 & 7: Exploration of the Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), covering evidence law, digital forensics, and admissibility of electronic records like WhatsApp chats, as well as expert opinions in trials.
The bootcamp aims to equip legal professionals and students with a comprehensive understanding of the far-reaching changes these laws will bring to criminal justice in India.
