Lalu Prasad Gets Six-Week Provisional Bail For Medical Treatment

The Jharkhand High Court on Friday granted provisional bail for six-week to RJD supremo Lalu Prasad on medical grounds. Lalu, who is in judicial custody after his sentencing in fodder scam cases, had applied for provisional bail for getting his ailment treated in an advanced medical center.

Notably, Lalu is presently on a three-day parole granted by the state government to attend his eldest son’s marriage in Patna. The parole, issued on Thursday, imposed certain conditions on Lalu during his stay in Patna like he has been barred from taking part in any activities, apart from the marriage.

While granting the provisional bail, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh said life was important for any person whether he was a convict or a common citizen. The reports of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences show that the condition of the kidneys and the heart are at a critical stage.

Lalu’s case was argued by a team of lawyers led by Abhishek Manu Singhvi. They stated there was no improvement in Lalu’s health after he was sent to AIIMS. They added it was necessary for Lalu to visit advanced medical centers, including Asian Heart Institute Mumbai, Global Hospital Bengaluru and Medanta in New Delhi for treatment of ailments related to heart and kidney.

CBI lawyer Rajiv Sinha objected to the bail petition, saying the AIIMS report on Lalu did not state that he required specialized treatment.

The CBI lawyer said the court had imposed certain conditions on Lalu before granting him the bail. Lalu cannot travel abroad as his passport has been submitted in court. Secondly, Lalu has been barred from holding a public rally or issuing a political statement. He has to submit a report regarding his treatment after six weeks.

“We would have to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 for Lalu’s release,” said Lalu’s lawyer Prabhat Kumar.
