Implementation Phase Of Crime And Criminal Tracking Network And Systems Stands Extended By One Year

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the extension of the implementation phase of the Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project for a year after 31st March 2017.

In order to create an integrated and comprehensive system to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of policing, Government of India has adopted the principle of e-governance and it has led to creation of nationwide networking infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled-state-of-the-art tracking system for 'Investigation of crime and detection of criminals' and the system is known as CCTNS.

Achievements under CCTNS Project in the last one year:

• 100% FIRs from More than 83% Police Stations in the country are entered using CCTNS software.


• National Crime data base consist of more than seven crore records as a result of migration of crime records to the CCTNS database since 2004.
  Also, the record consists of more than 120 lakhs FIR till date.


• 31 States/UTs have launched e-portals for providing services such as registration of complaints, verification of criminal antecedents/litigation of individuals/property, obtaining NOC from police for events for law and order clearance, search of missing person search, matching unidentified dead bodies, Vehicle related enquiries, antecedent verification for issue of passport etc.


• The ICJS dashboard has been launched on trial bases by some central investigation agencies by integrating CCTNS with e-Courts and e-prisons.


• Some states such as Bihar, Telangana and Puducherry have developed and rolled out software for Prosecutions and Forensics.Impact of the CCTNS Project:

CCTNS Projects will facilitate transparency and speed in police service, online registration of complaints, reporting and search of missing persons. Moreover, the search facility will be available in regional languages also.

Investigation officers will have access to Pan-India National Crime and Criminal database. Biometric based identification will facilitate hi-tech investigation capability.

National level crime analytics will help law maker in making timely and appropriate policies.

Integration with e-Governance projects such as Aadhaar, National Population Register, Vaahan Project of the Ministry of Surface Transport, Passport Seva and National Emergency Response System Project expedite police verification requests and investigations.
