ILNU Holds 7th Students’ Conference On International Humanitarian And Refugee Laws

Under the aegis of Institute of Law, Nirma University, The Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law organized the seventh edition of its annual flagship event, National Students Conference on International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws. The conference was organized in association with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), on Wednesday. The conference aimed to address contemporary issues and challenges faced by the scholars, academicians and practitioners in the field of International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws. Prof. (Dr). Purvi Pokhariyal, Director and Dean Institute of Law, Nirma University welcomed the dignitaries to the conference.

Chief Guest Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, discussed the relevance of the subject of human rights, international humanitarian law and refugee laws. He stressed on the importance of activist role among young students. He also referred in concern to national human rights about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the protest people are showing towards it. He also discussed the issue of NRC and Rohingyas.

Guest of Honor Prof. Narendra Singh, Professor Emeritus, Maharshi Law School, MUIT Noida furthered the discussion by focusing on the preamble and establishment of United Nations about 73 years ago and still there are issues that persist in regards to armed conflicts, cyber-attacks, remote control weapons and refugee issues. Dr. Anup Singh, Director General-Nirma University delivered the presidential address.

The three technical sessions of paper presentations had topics regarding ranging from recognition of Human Rights of Women and LGBT Refugees as well as Interface between IHL and Refugee Law.

The sessions were chaired by Dr. Rishikesh Dave and Miss Tamalin Bolus (1^st Session), Prof. Narendra Singh and Teena Joseph (2^nd Session) and Dr. Anuradha Saibaba and Dr. Sridhar Patnaik (3^rd Session). There were winners in all the sessions from respective contemporary issues in ongoing scenario. Prof. Rejitha Nair, coordinator of the conference, informed that 67 papers were received from 37 universities for the conference. Mr. Aditya Sharma, Student Chairperson of Human Rights Centre, delivered the vote of thanks.
