The Punjab & Haryana High Court today issued notice to the Punjab government on a female advocate's plea seeking police protection in light of alleged death threats she received from some unknown persons after she took up "some controversial cases".
Considering the petition, the bench of Justice Vinod S. Bhardwaj issued notice to the State authorities.
Satinder Kaur, an advocate practising in the High Court said she has been receiving repetitive threats from unknown persons on her phone since August 8, 2023. The callers allegedly said she has done enough cases against them and they will not let her practice. They also allegedly threatened to kill her and her family.
Kaur states that "despite the severity and continuity of these threats, no step were taken by the SSP, Mohali even after 20 days of lodging the complaint, nothing is done to provide the security to the petitioner." The Police keep asking for time, the plea added.
Kaur submits that the threats might be connected with "some controversial cases" that she is contesting; for instance she is representing farmers whose lands are eroded by illegal mining and PIL filed for drug-de addiction and rehabilitation.
The matter is now listed on October 20, for further consideration.
Counsel for petitioner: Senior Advocate Dr Anmol Ratan Siddhu
