The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday lauded the State government's initiative to procure a large number of buses for ferrying school children in its bid to reduce the number of cars on road.

"The most commendable aspect of the matter is the short time within which an initiative has been taken," a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh remarked while perusing the status report filed in the PIL moved by one Philip Khrawbok Shati.

The Court observed that despite school buses being available, parents or guardians of wards may still continue to use their private vehicles for security reasons. However, it was informed that to allay the misgivings of concerned parents, CCTVs were fitted in the buses and and an App has been circulated or will be circulated to the parents for the parents to follow, real-time, the location of the buses and what may be going on inside such buses.

It is almost revolutionary, the bench remarked, adding that State should work on other measures to further ease the traffic issue in the capital city, whether by building roads, parking lots, making one-way streets or other form of regulation. "The State should continue the good effort in such regard," it said and posted the matter on 7th July for further consideration.
