The President of India has appointed Justice H.S Thangkhiew, senior-most Judge of the Meghalaya High Court as its Acting Chief Justice with effect from November 2, 2023 as the current Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee retired today.

The notification issued in this regard reads thus:

"In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Hamarsan Singh Thanglchiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 02.11.2023 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on 01.11.2023".

About Justice H.S Thangkhiew

Justice HS Thangkhiew did his LL.B from Delhi University in 1990 and was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in 1990-1991.

After a long career in legal practice the Gauhati High Court had designated him as senior Advocate in August 2010.

He assumed office as a judge of the High Court of Meghalaya on November 19, 2018 and has previously also served as Acting Chief Justice in the year 2019.
