The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has moved the Madras High Court seeking directions to the Election Commission of India to call for explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his hate speeches and to take actions to curb false, derogatory statements and to restrain him from making further misleading and derogatory statements against Congress Election Manifesto.

The plea filed through Committee's President K.Selvaperunthagai alleged that fearing defeat in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP has been indulging in a divisive campaign of Hindu Nationalism.

Citing the recent speeches made by Modi, the plea says that the Prime Minister's speech had been replete with fabrications and abusive language aimed at discrediting the Congress Party's manifesto and its credibility without any iota of truth.

The plea also says that the speech, which targets sections of the minority is not only disrespectful but also shameful and treacherous as they fuel communal tensions and sow division among the people.

The plea adds that the PM, who is expected to uphold the dignity of all citizens of the country, has been violating the oath of office by making such statements. The plea adds that such statements are deeply concerning and sets a dangerous precedent.

The plea alleges that despite numerous complaints, the Election Commission has only sent a show cause notice and such leniency shown by the ECI sends a wrong signal to the citizens and undermines the whole electoral process.

Thus, a prayer is sought to direct the ECI to issue notice to Modi and call for an explanation regarding his recent speech. The plea also seeks for decisive action to curb Modi's false, derogative statements and communal rhetoric and consequently restrain him from making further misleading and derogative statements against Congress Election Manifesto and tarnishing the credibility of the Indian National Congress in order to ensure a level playing field for all the political parties to campaign in a free and fair manner.
