[Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case] Issued Documents For Convicts To Travel Back To Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan High Commission Tells Madras High Court

The submission was made before the bench of Justice R Suresh Kumar and Justice K Kumaresh Babu. The court was dealing with a plea filed by Srikaran seeking directions to the Director of Rehabilitation to issue a photo ID card to him allowing him to apply for travel documents.

During the course of the proceedings, the Additional Public Prosecutor informed the court that the Sri Lankan High Commission had already given temporary travel documents to the three convicts and that the same had been communicated to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

It was further informed that since travel documents in original had been issued by the High Commission, a necessary deportation order will be passed by the FRRO at Chennai and once the deportation order is issued, the convicts can travel back to their home country, Sri Lanka.

The court took note of the submissions. Noting that the temporary travel documents itself was valid for the convicts to seek deportation orders, the court opined that the relief as sought by Srikaran was not necessary and thus disposed of the petition.

Previously, Murugan's wife, Nalini had also moved the court seeking directions to the State to permit Murugan to appear before the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai and get an all-country passport allowing him to travel to the United Kingdom and settle with his daughter there. The court had sought a reply from the State, which had then informed the court that it had made arrangements for Murugan to appear before the High Commission
