The Kerala High Court on Wednesday (December 4) asked the Ernakulam Collector to look into the issue of rejuvenation of Mullassery Canal and the leakage in the flat complex constructed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Justice Devan Ramachandran said that the issue will be exacerbated if rainfall occurs.

The developments ensued in a petition filed in 2018 regarding the blockage of a canal within the Cochin Corporation. The seriousness of the issue was projected to the public domain in the year 2018 when the city witnessed never-before-seen flooding.

The Court lamented that even after more than 2 years, the rejuvenation of the canal could not be completed. The Court remarked that the people will get tired and stop fighting. The Court specifically pointed towards the Cyclone Fengal and the destruction it is causing in Chennai and Puducherry. The Court said such a cyclone would create disastrous effects in Kochi.

If Mulaserry Canal does not start to flow, Kochi will drown”.

The Court also criticized the people for dumping plastic bottles in the open. The Court reminded that when rain comes such waste ends up in canals. It will block the drainage and cause floods.
