Advocates Association of Bangalore has written to the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, N V Anjaria, requesting to stop the live streaming of court proceedings for a few days.
In a communication dated September 20, the association states that for the past few days, the Karnataka High Court has hit national headlines for some controversial statements made by a certain judge during the case hearing on live streaming.
Further, it says “Serious Controversies have erupted over the statements made by the learned judge Justice Sreeshanand and the same has gone viral all over India. Apart from the same it has hurt the sentiments of advocates young and old who have taken up this noble profession. Even advocates have been made an object of censure in some such statements.”
Referring to the statement made to a lady advocate which has grabbed national attention, the letter says “While this brings into focus the larger issue of treatment to younger members of the bar and by judges and particularly the treatment to lady advocates the Advocates Association Bangalore requests that till such time until there is sensitisation on views that could be aired in open courts there should be total stoppage of live streaming for such courts. Otherwise the situation would aggravate and the image in public of courts would be totally damaged.”
The letter also states that the judge is good in his judgments and is known for his integrity. Members also feel that all the good work of the judge is taken away with such side statements and jibes which are "wholly irrelevant for the occasion."
