'Lawyers Not Getting Justice': Jharkhand High Court Calls For Comprehensive Insurance Benefits For Lawyers

The Jharkhand High Court has called upon the Central and State governments to make provisions for extending insurance benefits to the lawyers community in the state.

Bench of Chief Justice Dr. B.R. Sarangi and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad said often lawyers are not able to maintain themselves properly and it is for the government to formulate guidelines with regard to grant of life and medical insurance.

“It appears that though the lawyers' community is helping the people by discharging his duty in dispensation of justice but they are not being given justice either by the State or by the Union. Therefore, the time has come that the lawyers should be protected by providing insurance benefit like health and other benefits, which is admissible under the law,” it observed.

The court directed that the counsel for the State and Union of India, along with the Bar Council of India, Jharkhand State Bar Council, and the President of the Advocates Association, should bring on record the steps taken to claim such benefits for the concerned individuals.

"Their services are highly essential and many of the lawyers are not able to maintain properly because of paucity of fund, as such this endeavor should be made at the level of the State and the Central Government so that the lawyers' community be protected. Therefore, this Court makes an observation that the benefit of insurance should be extended to the lawyers as a whole," the bench added while listing the matter for further hearing on July 31.
