The Himachal Pradesh High Court has ordered an inspection of the Neugal River Bank in Kangra's Palampur to verify whether garbage is still being dumped there. The court has directed the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Kangra, to get the inspection done and submit a report.

The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Ajay Mohan Goel after perusing the reply filed by the Municipal Corporation, Palampur. The civic body had stated in its reply that it had taken steps to protect the environment in the area, including stopping the dumping of garbage on the river bank. The Court has ordered the inspection to verify the same.

The Court has also directed the Registry to send a copy of the paper book to the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Kangra.

The order comes after a local NGO, the Dhauladhar Sewa Samiti, had filed a memorandum before the Palampur Municipal Corporation asking it to stop dumping garbage on the river bank. The said memorandum was widely reported in the media which led Court to take suo motu cognisance of the issue.

The court has listed the matter for further hearing on August 17, 2023.

Case Title: Court on its own motion.
