The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Judicial Officer Vimal Kanaiyalal Vyas as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court.
In its resolution passed yesterday, the Collegium has said on 7 February 2023, the Chief Justice of the High Court in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues made the above recommendation.
In order to ascertain his suitability for elevation to the High Court, the Collegium consulted SC Judges conversant with the affairs of the High Court and also scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record.
The Collegium further considered the views of the consultee-judges on the suitability of the candidate, the report of the Judgment Assessment Committee and the assessment made by the Government of India in the file and found him fit for the recommendation.
The statement of the Collegium further adds that while considering the above proposal, it also took note of the fact that the proposal involved non-recommendation of a senior judicial officer.
Finding cogent reasons in HC’s proposal for not recommending his name, the Collegium agreed with the HC's decision to overlook him.
In view of this, the Collegium resolved to recommend that Vimal Kanaiyalal Vyas, Judicial Officer, be appointed as a judge of the High Court of Gujarat.
