Justice Cheekati Manavendranath Roy was sworn in as a judge of the Gujarat High Court on Thursday. Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal administered the oath of office.

Justice Roy, previously serving in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, was transferred to the Gujarat High Court based on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, as stated in their official communication issued on August 10, 2023. His appointment has increased the total number of judges in the Gujarat High Court to 30.

Justice Roy embarked on his legal journey in July 1988 when he enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh. He practiced law for 14 years in Parvathipuram and Vizianagaram, becoming the third-generation lawyer in his family.

In 2002, he was appointed as District and Sessions Judge (Grade-II) in the State Higher Judicial Service. Following rigorous training at the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy, he served in various capacities, including I Additional District Judge in Anantapur, VI, V, and IV Additional District Judges in Visakhapatnam, and Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Hyderabad.

He also held positions as II and I Additional District Judges, Principal District Judge in Visakhapatnam, and Principal District Judge in Krishna at Machilipatnam. Notably, he was the Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh VAT Tribunal in Visakhapatnam.

With the establishment of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh at Amaravati, Justice Roy made history as the first Registrar General of the High Court, starting from January 1, 2019. Later, on June 20, 2019, he was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. His significant contributions to the legal field are underscored by the fact that he was the inaugural judge appointed after the constitution of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on January 1, 2019.
