The Gujarat High Court has ordered a police investigation against a doctor accused of issuing fraudulent medical certificates to prisoners to help them secure bail.

This decision was prompted by two applications from prisoners seeking temporary bail for medical treatment, which led the court to scrutinize the authenticity of the medical certificates involved.

The bench comprising Justice MK Thakkar discovered that both certificates presented, one from Dreamz Multi Speciality Hospital and the other from Shree Hari Multi Speciality Hospital, bore the name and stamp of Dr. ML Patel.

The bench noted that while the doctor had an MBBS degree, he had issued a certificate for surgery, which he was not qualified to perform. The previous instances were also taken note of where the doctor had issued such fake certificates using the names of various hospitals.

The bench further noted an order from the trial court, which questioned the certificate issued by Dreamz Multi Speciality Hospital and the mention of the MBBS degrees and Member of the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom.

The trial court had further observed that the doctor was in a habit of issuing the Medical Certificates in the name of different hospitals i.e. Aarzoo, Shri Hari and Dreamz to aid prisoners for filing applications for bail before the court of law.

“Prima facie, it appears that the doctor, Mahendra L Patel, has been issuing these bogus certificates in the name of different hospitals with different addresses. Let the certificate issued by Dr Patel be verified and examined by the concerned Investigating Officer under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Surat, so that the facts can be revealed,” Justice Thakkar said.

The bench directed the concerned Investigating Officer to verify and examine the certificates issued by Dr. M.L.Patel under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Surat so that correct and true facts be placed on record.

The matter will now be listed on 8 June.
