The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (December 10) granted interim bail on medical grounds to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the custodial death case of Unnao rape victim's father.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri granted interim bail for 10 days to Sengar who is serving 10 years of imprisonment in the case.

The Court partly allowed Sengar's plea and suspended his sentence for the time being. It noted that Sengar was granted a similar relief recently by a division bench in the rape case.

Justice Ohri directed that Sengar be released on interim bail till December 20 on furnishing of personal bond of Rs. 50,000 and a surety of the like amount.

On March 4, 2020, Sengar was convicted for offences under IPC Sections 120B(criminal conspiracy), 193(Punishment for false evidence), 201(Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 203(Giving false information respecting an offence committed), 211(False charge of offence made with intent to injure), 323(Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341(Punishment for wrongful restraint) and 304 (Part ii) (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Sections 3 read with 25 of Arms Act.

In April 2018, the family of the minor rape victim had travelled to Unnao for a court hearing when her father was brutally assaulted by the accused persons in broad daylight.

The very next day, the police arrested the father on allegations of being in illegal possession of arms and he had ultimately succumbed to multiple injuries suffered by him in police custody.

In August 2019, trial of five cases in the matter, including the case concerning victim's father's death, were transferred from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, by the Apex Court.
