The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to decide within six weeks a representation regarding payment of minimum stipend to junior lawyers hired by advocates and senior advocates.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela disposed of a PIL filed by lawyer Simran Kumari who wrote a representation to the BCI on January 27.

It was her case that no action had been taken yet on her representation.

The bench orally remarked that the issue needs to be flagged and decided by the BCI.

Advocate Preet Pal Singh appearing for BCI submitted that the representation was taken up in the last meeting of the lawyers' body but was deferred.

He said that the representation will be taken up by BCI and will be decided accordingly.

“This court directs the Bar Council of India to decide the petitioner's representation as expeditiously as possible, preferably within six weeks, in accordance with law,” the court said while disposing of the PIL.
