Two public interest litigations have been moved before the Calcutta High Court seeking heightened security for university students after recent clashes with Education Minister Bratya Basu's convoy.

In the ensuing violence, it is alleged that the minister's convoy attempted to run over students who had gathered around his vehicle. Protests were to be held against the education minister by the SFI students, but the same had turned violent after the convoy reportedly drove into the crowd of students.

The matters were mentioned before a division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das).

Counsel submitted that due to the upcoming elections at the university, heightened security at the campus was the need of the hour.

Another matter was moved before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh on the issue of police overaction against the protesting students. That matter is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, 5th March.
